Grünauer serves up an authentic taste of Austrian/German cuisine that's both charming and satisfying. While the food could benefit from a tad more seasoning (we jokingly wished for some hot sauce!), it stays true to the traditional flavors of the region. The beer selection is top-notch, perfectly complementing the hearty dishes. Our server was exceptionally attentive, making our dining experience all the more enjoyable. The atmosphere is a true standout--set in a historic train yard building, the decor evokes the cozy, welcoming vibe of a classic Austrian restaurant. Although the prices are on the higher side, the portions are generous and justify the cost. A surprising highlight was the cheese danish, which tasted like a high-end cheesecake--a delightful finish to our meal. We'll definitely be returning for another visit!
Grunauer is often a charming and atmosphery restaurant that we overlook. The building and furnishings alone are a topic worthy of a poem. It feels very much like you have stepped back in time but with modern amenities. The design is suiting to where it is placed in the city, granting it even more ambiance. During the holidays the entire area is decorated lovely and always worth a trip to. The staff is warm and friendly and the food tastes similar to your Oma's especially the potato salad and cucumber salad. I love that much of the ingredients, all the way through the meats, is locally sourced. Make sure you save room for dessert. Great place for family dinners, work gatherings and dates.
Fantastic food and excellent service. The ambience is elegant yet semi casual with white cloth tables and up scale Service. Absolutely loved our experience and meals!
During my recent visit to Kansas City, I discovered a hidden gem for dinner that transported me straight back to my time in Austria. Nestled in a bustling shopping area, this delightful restaurant offers ample parking, including a convenient charging station for electric vehicles at the back--perfect for those who want to recharge their cars while enjoying the local scene. Upon entering, I was immediately captivated by the charming interior that beautifully mirrors the warmth and comfort of Austrian decor. The menu is a culinary treasure trove, with an array of mouthwatering options that make you feel like you've stepped into a cozy European eatery. I couldn't resist ordering the Schweinehaxe and a classic pork schnitzel. Both dishes were a delight--tender, flavorful, and genuinely representative of authentic Austrian cuisine. Every bite was a joyous reminder of the rich flavors and traditions that define this culinary style. Look no further if you're craving an unforgettable dining experience that serves up genuine Austrian fare. I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to anyone eager to explore the taste of Austria right here in KC!
The food here is so tasty and well-prepared. Such a calm and inviting ambiance during the Christmas time! Our Server was so kind and helpful too. :) Would love to come back whenever I'm back in KC!
The Best place I've been in a long time!!! The food was fabulous and the service was exceptional!!! I loved the look of the inside of the restaurant..was very authentic European looking!!
I cannot say enough great things about this place. I LOVED EVERY SINGLE BITE! The waiter was amazing (shout out to AJ S). The ambiance was perfect. The food was the best! My friend and I had the best afternoon lunch on a Sunday. We chose from the weekend lunch menu--the 3 course lunch. The cream of mushroom soup was divine. They swirled rich sour cream in right before serving because I tasted just the swirl and it was so rich and creamy. I loved that there were bits of mushroom in the soup. It was not puréed to death. Loved it! The main courses were fabulous. The pork tenderloin was indeed TENDER! I cut it with my butter knife. The steak knife wasn't even necessary. I think I may have used my fork to cut it too. It was that tender. The dumpling was as expected. The cabbage was good too--I think I tasted cinnamon. I enjoyed the dumpling with the cabbage with a little gravy. That combination was great. The root vegetable (seasonal hash) entree was out of this world magnificent. The maple cider glaze was perfection. I brought half of it home and I dare say it was even better the next day. The desserts were delightful! The Apple strudel was balanced with perfectly cooked apples and flaky pastry. The farmer's cheese strudel was delicious with kind of a grainy white curd type of cheese that wasn't quite cream cheese, and not quite feta texture... I loved it and wanted to lick the plate, but if you have any kind of issue with texture, this dish may not be for you. I'd describe it as a cheesecake-like-strudel-for-the-adventurous. Both desserts had delicious raisins. They may have made an appearance in my dreams recently.... I told my friend that I can usually find at least one fault in a meal, something I would have done differently or wished had been better. But with this lunch? I found nothing to complain about. Not. One. Thing. I have discovered that I do indeed enjoy German food. And when it's this good? I'll be back.
What a great restaurant! It was recommended to be by a local and did not disappoint. Thankfully we made a reservation because the restaurant was packed when we arrived. Despite that, it didn't feel overcrowded; the tables are a decent space apart so you aren't on top of each other. We had the Wiener Schnitzel, which was just how I remembered it from Vienna. It was cooked perfectly and the portion was huge! The apple strudel was quite good as well. I think they have a patio with a biergarten during the warmer months, which would be worth checking out on my next visit.
We celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary at Grunauer, and it was a truly wonderful experience from start to finish. The atmosphere inside was spacious yet incredibly welcoming, with dark wood accents and cozy seating that made us feel right at home. Our waitress was bubbly, engaging, and knew the menu inside and out, which made choosing our meals a breeze. We both opted for the schnitzel--my husband had the pork, and I chose the chicken. Both were perfectly breaded, light, and flavorful, with the meat cooked to juicy perfection. I had expected Austrian-German food to be a bit heavy, but each dish surprised me with how balanced and satisfying it was. Even though we were pretty full, we took the apple strudel home and were delighted by how flaky and flavorful it was, and it was reheated well. Plenty of parking, quick seating, and fantastic service made for a seamless dining experience. I couldn't have asked for a better place to celebrate a special occasion. We'll definitely be back!
We had no idea what to expect when we booked our reservation. I was very pleased to find food and a menu which was both elevated and approachable. We loved everything we had. I highly recommend the pork three ways entree. It was fantastic! Oh, and the sauerkraut! Who knew it could be a show stopper?! I guess we know now. The restaurant was clean and lively, but not so loud that my wife and I couldn't have conversation. This was an all around win for us. Service, food and atmosphere were all on point.
